There are some entities that time just does not seem to affect. The underground is positively teeming with all sorts of acts out there that manage to accomplish many great things be they on a large scale or on a smaller level, but to witness a band come around that is undeniably thirsty to get out there are much as possible and have the capacity to do so in immense quality is to bear witness to a fantastic exception in the darkness. When Iku-Turso first came around six years ago, I don’t think many of us could’ve expected their path to take them somewhere that is just mind-boggling to behold with quality all but synonymous with their sound that is constantly ebbing into different forms. With their latest outing, they manage to continue just that.

It’s a difficult thing to be as active as what we’ve seen with Iku-Turso and not have your quality suffer greatly from one work to the next. Since their debut album in 2017, Iku-Turso has managed to put out at least one piece of material every year be it an EP, split, or full-length album with tremendous albums like “Pakana” and “Storm over Isengard” being some of their most striking in that constant thread of domination. Pound for pound and beat for beat, “Ikuinen Kirous” easily comes toe to toe with those behemoths of old school black metal done to devilish effect. Much like “Pakana”, it’s the fierce melodic aspect of this creation that really pulls the listener into the dark storm where Iku-Turso reigns supreme with the very lightning cracking at the snap of their fingers and the winds shifting to their will. Paired with a production that elicits the vibes and old school atmospheres of many works that call the 80s and 90s home, “Ikuinen Kirous” doesn’t mess around for so much as a millisecond. As sharp as ever and with an edge that only the finest of cutthroat black metal are able to summon forth from the darkness, it would be an outright crime to look upon what Iku-Turso has done here and know shout resoundingly that they have done it yet again!

The odds favor those who keep at it no matter what happens, yet fortune has always seemed to be on the side of Iku-Turso with each of their releases having some special to offer all its own such that it all takes own individual identities while always delivering standout performances. In every given form, “Ikuinen Kirous” is but the latest victory is a string of vicious offensives from Iku-Turso whose brilliance and power should never once be brought into question.
