For years now, Midnight Odyssey has been nothing less than an absolute juggernaut when it comes to god-tier atmospheric black metal the likes of which we rarely see. The master Dis Pater has been a constant source of otherworldly excellence with this act being his most fascinating by far as he is consistently taking the style to new heights heretofore undreamt of. Since 2019, Midnight Odyssey has been crafting an utterly monolithic trilogy in the form of “Biolume” whose first two iterations saw the act reach its highest peaks yet with it being the sort of career-defining releases that many can only ever hope to come even close to. With its final chapter, “Biolume” becomes its most aggressive yet arguably its highest reaches for all that it dared to bring to the table.
Words can only do so much justice for any given work, but it is when we’re presented with albums such as this that a reviewer’s job feels downright insurmountable. In the face of such majesty and grandeur at every given turn, how can words ever truly and fully encapsulate all that is brought before one’s self? Midnight Odyssey has never once lacked in splendor or a tremendously multi-dimensional sound that offers so much more than what the majority of the scene could even conjure in their dreams, and it’s with the utter entirety of “A Fullmoon Madness” that Midnight Odyssey yet again establishes overwhelming dominance over the craft. This is to witness a true master at work without so much as a shred of compromise to be had in any form be it from the black metal that gels perfectly with the doom-laden songwriting while the symphonic and synth enhancements only elevate the spectacle beyond belief into another dimension altogether that is separate from much of what has come before it. Astonishingly beautiful as much as it is unrelenting in all of best ways, Midnight Odyssey has transcended its own sound to become a pillar of a style all its own.
“A Fullmoon Madness” has so much to offer for any of those brave enough to bask in its illuminating lunar visage for all the wonders and nightmares that it brings forth with those able to withstand the horrors within able to emerge knowing they’ve experienced something that we likely have never seen on such a scale before. Even after spending what feels like days within its confines, I still find it immensely difficult to put such an experience into the right words with it ultimately coming down to a very simple concept: “A Fullmoon Madness” is something that must be experienced in order to be believed.
