Every so often, we’re given a piece that really knows how to get underneath the skin. A work that manages to subvert your expectations and unnerve you in such a way that makes you twist a little in your seat is something that many of the dark corners of the metal underground strive for every single day. Only the most exceptionally demented are able to tap into that dark realm and come up with a product that is just as grotesque as it is alluring to our foolish curiosity. Bringing just that to the table with an industrial twist to really fire off on all cylinders, Aabode’s death metal is like an assassin as they slide the knife between our ribs, twisting it for maximum torture.
The industrialization of death metal on a scale like this is simply something that we don’t get to see often, and while I can understand why, there are very few things in the wide spectrum of death metal that can compare when it’s executed correctly. Those that do try tend to lack substance and that component of power that is as alluring as it is intimidating for all that it dares to be, yet it’s with this EP that Aabode clearly already knows how to do it to immense effect. “Moist” is already an off-putting name for many, and it’s here at every turn that Aabode puts that to bring about a final product that is horrific to lose yourself in. We’ve seen plenty of acts in just the last few years attempt to infuse their death metal with dissonance to bring about a particularly potent sample of flavors and twists that always keep the listener guessing as to what comes next, but few have done it as effectively as what Aabode has with “Moist” to combine it with a harsh industrial approach that quickly enables the EP to take on a spirit incredibly few others can really compare to be it in terms of hostility, intimidation, or downright terrifying to stare into. “Moist” dares to attack the listener where they’re most vulnerable with nothing able to truly stand in its path as the brand of harrowing desolation as nothing is able to stand in its path and able to stand unscathed if left standing at all.
What Aabode has dared to bring to the table for this effort cannot be seen as anything less than bombastically aggressive. Between its industrial nature and overwhelming presence that poses quite a threat for the whole of the EP, “Moist” is a staggering debut for Aabode by virtually every measure in this particular vein of madness. Whatever is to follow next from Aabode in the years to come is given a proper foundation with more than enough room for expansion with Aabode already making great promises with all that “Moist” has to offer.
