For the almost ten years that I have been doing these reviews, I have had the immense pleasure of finding many different names across many of the different avenues that populate the vast underground scenes of metal and rock music with each of them having staple names that are all varying levels of popularity but nonetheless embody the best of what the given style is capable of at any given moment. When it comes to all things in the world of psychedelic rock, especially in the instrumental reaches, The Re-Stoned has been a constant presence since my discovery of them. Time and again they’ve displayed their overwhelming love and knowledge of the sound with few able to come even close to what’s constantly being put on display by these masters. With this brand new EP, The Re-Stoned retains their hold over the sound with their colorful riffs and atmospheres pulling every bit of their weight.
Expansive and kaleidoscopic has long been the name of the game when it comes to The Re-Stoned. Whether they’re travelling down the path of straightforward riffage with a healthy dose of psychedelia or going all in on the trippiness to make for a wild ride through alternative dimensions heretofore undiscovered, The Re-Stoned have always been a fascinating band to watch as they weave their incredibly strong magics. For all that they’ve brought to the table for the four tracks of “Spectrum”, it is the psychedelic nature of the band that takes the reigns here with the results expectedly tantalizing. Wanderlust is at the core of this EP as The Re-Stoned hurl you down a path that sees you observe the world for all it is. All of its beauties, all of its menaces, all of its haunts, all of its glories, all of its disappointments, all of its splendors, and everything in between that is possible in this plane of reality. It is from another plane altogether, though, that “Spectrum” allows the listener to traverse above it all, detached from everything to really take it all in. Bounding from one dimension to the next with pieces like “Three Shades” and “Solaris” demonstrating the bounce that The Re-Stoned still has after all these years, “From the Ashes” that touches on the soul for its reminiscing and pensive tendencies, and “Word of the Eternal” seeing it all resolved and accepted in a form that can only be likened to the state of nirvana for ancient monks of the old world, The Re-Stoned demonstrates at every turn that they’ve still undoubtedly at the top of the pecking order for all things psychedelic rock.
After many albums, EPs, and much experimentation between all of them, The Re-Stoned has yet to disappoint in even the slightest form. Their brand of psychedelia mixed with their undeniable hold over the entirety of the sound cannot be understated with the very name of The Re-Stoned worthy of being broadcasted the world over. “Spectrum” is but the latest in a years-long streak of mastery the likes of which extremely few others can find themselves on with that fact not likely to change any time as far as the eye can see.
