Hundreds of thousands of times have we see new acts spring from the woodwork of the metal undergrowth to make their claim for glory be it to climb their way to the very top or to simply craft their own brands of intensity even if it means shrouding themselves in eternal obscurity. While it was earlier this year with the likes of Furnace Floor that I felt the seething realms of death-doom metal have found its newest name to keep an eye on for all of its purveyors and underground excavators, I should have known better that there was always a chance of something else rising from the nothingness. With a 2-track EP that can easily be overlooked, Banished Realm comes upon the scene with a lot more fervor and flavor than what I could have possibly expected.

It’s no secret that making an impression with just a pair of tracks to call your own isn’t much in virtually every regard. Unless both pieces are several minutes in length, there simply isn’t enough time to make any sort of lasting impression for all that you are capable of as a band be it because you’re just starting out, you can only do so much in just two tracks, both, or something else entirely. When we’re given acts like Banished Realm, however, with their debut EP of “Impious Rumination”, we’re able to see just how remarkable some can make such a situation. In just seventeen and a half minutes, Banished Realm poises itself to do great things in the underground should it follow the spirit and direction that’s been laid forth in this EP. A real piece of the underground that is innocuous at first but quickly opening up for those who take the plunge into its depths, “Impious Rumination” offers a multi-faceted sound of death-doom that takes both of the styles into great consideration whether it come in the form of a slow but immensely methodical approach or an unbridled outburst of rage and hate that leaves nothing but blood-tainted earth in its wake. Just as competent at grand evisceration as they are at macabre beauty that makes for a truly dense, dynamic creation on damn near every level, Banished Realm has truly put its best foot forward for its first foray into the wild underground.

Where many others would understandably flounder in some aspects, Banished Realm exudes nothing but confidence and determination for all that they bring forth within “Impious Rumination”. Given time and the proper attention to detail, Banished Realm is sure to find itself on the path to domination in its own little corner of the underground where many death-doom acts spring forth but few excel. With all that’s been presented to us within “Impious Rumination”, I can’t help but envision Banished Realm accomplishing the latter.
