The ancient texts of mostly forgotten lore have played important roles in the crafting of the world as we know it today with some aspects more commercially known while others continue to spend millennia mostly in the shadows of obscurity. Metal music has never been one to shy away from invoking those rarely spoken deities whose magic is still to be tapped into for those bold enough to try and bring them back into the light, yet few are able to do so in such a way that feels impactful and well done. I wasn’t expecting much from Broken Pillars’s debut EP with it having but two tracks to call its own, yet the Middle Eastern act surprises at virtually every turn through this dramatic and flavorful creation.
It’s not terribly often that we’re able to see a band rise out of the Middle East for many different reasons, but that hasn’t stopped the global conquest of metal music from shying away from that region of the world for even a moment. While some may think of acts like Arallu, Al-Namrood, or Azooma for what the region has to offer, there is always more than enough room for expansion. With a death-doom approach that taps into the ancient history of their homeland, Broken Pillars already proves itself to be more than capable of achieving such a goal. Armed with a tremendous understanding of the sound that is already paying off to a magnificent degree, “Of Pillars and Primordial Myths” sees largely forgotten deities revered and brought back into the fold as Broken Pillars draws a direct line of influence to their land’s long-gone Persian ancestry that was once of the most dominant kingdoms on the planet whose effects we can still see today. Far more than simple riffage and a mild sense of melancholy, Broken Pillars immediately shows us that they’re not an act that’s playing around or taking any half-measures right out of the gate with these two tracks having more substance than some bands are able to summon for a full-length album.
Of course, this is but the first piece of material from Broken Pillars so there is still more than enough room for improvement all across the board, but make no mistake – “Of Pillars and Primordial Myths” is nothing to scoff at nor look down upon! What’s been laid down here is a prime foundation for excellence to be built upon in due time, and if this is what the foundational debut looks like then I shudder to think what monolith is to follow that Broken Pillars will erect to defy the ages. Be it in the heavens with gods long out of the spotlight or traversing the sands and reminiscing on glory gone by, Broken Pillars seems to be more than up to the task of resurrecting such wonders with exemplary death-doom.
