Of all the styles out there in the sprawling spectrum of metal, not many are able to easily bring forward a melancholic sound that easily takes into account a macabre beauty right alongside unyielding intensity without overpowering the other either. Doom metal has certainly grown a reputation for being able to do just that, but it has to be with its subculture of death-doom that we see the concept having been done to tremendous effect for decades now. There is little doubt as to what’s still capable within the sound should the right band simply come up to the plate with those worthy acts still few and far between. With their third album in a grand ten year run thus far, Convocation comes with its most ambitious work to date that shows us just how much splendor and dark glory death-doom has to dish out.

It’s right out of the gate that the bar should be quite high when considering all that Convocation has brought to the table so quickly in only ten years of bringing such desolation and beautiful despair upon the masses. Their brand of darkness has been nothing short of exquisite with their first two albums, and it is certifiably with all that they’ve summoned for their third, “No Dawn for the Caliginous Night”, that they’ve broken throw a particular barrier that well and truly sets them apart from much of the competition in practically every given way. Five tracks that are simply monolithic even in their simplest forms with each and every one of them have a unique tapestry of woe, shadow, and the most awe-inspiring brand of captivation that drives the record to become something truly bold and daring with the use of a cello in every other track only further elevating the glory with which Convocation capitalizes on all throughout this creation. “No Dawn for the Caliginous Night” is a multi-faceted creation that acts as quite possibly the most grandiose and spectacular work of death-doom that 2023 has thrown our way with it being all but undeniable that this stands as Convocation’s crowning achievement thus far. What’s been summoned forth here from Convocation is nothing short of a master-class display of what it means to do naught but supreme justice for death-doom as a whole with the prospect of Convocation’s inevitable conquest of the sound in time only seeming inevitable at this rate.

This is what it means to show your clear and indisputable dominance over your craft. Since day one, Convocation has never been a force to underestimate nor take lightly yet it is with everything they’ve achieved for “No Dawn for the Caliginous Night” that they’ve taken things to such a high level that it becomes damn near tear-inducing to gaze upon. If they haven’t already, Convocation is on the path to become synonymous with the darkest beauty with this magnificent opus a massive leap in that very direction.
