Already, we’ve been spoiled lately with all things psychedelic in rock music. The last few years have been downright bountiful in every regard be it in the form of veteran acts returning to us with landmark albums that will shine in their discographies for decades to come or new names rising from the ether to show us what splendor there is still to be had even after all that’s been done. Born out of jam sessions straight out of the pipedreams of every psych-rockers kaleidoscope vision, Yawning Balch came onto the scene earlier this year to deliver the best of both those scenarios. It was already with “Volume One” that saw such a dream match-up pay off, but it has to be with “Volume Two” that Yawning Balch was only preparing us for the immense glory that was to be had with this effort.

When we take into consideration everything that’s possible within the sprawling confines of psychedelic rock, especially when you take the element of a vocalist out of the mix, truly anything can seem possible given the right circumstances. Yawning Balch needed to prove nothing when it first came into being given the pedigree of its members, but it has to be with “Volume Two” that we’re able to bear witness to an act that has quickly come into its own to become a force that I’m sure many will want to see much more of in the future. Three tracks spanning over forty minutes of otherworldly splendor that only the best of the best in this style are able to summon, “Volume Two” is a real tastemaker of an album. Hypnotic from the get-go and never once letting you go be it in the form of immense rhythms and transcendent grooves, Yawning Balch knew what they were doing from the very start. Where many would need time to wind up to really show us what they’re able to do, Yawning Balch doesn’t hesitate for so much as a millisecond with every given bit of “Volume Two” one scrumptious, mesmerizing detail after another as we see a legendary jam session bear more fruit than I think many of us were bargaining for when news of such a union came before us. Truly, expectations have been blown out of the water with both volumes having more than enough psychedelic rock mastery to go around yet it’s with this second offering that I can’t help but feel things were taken to a new level altogether.

When we get a meeting of such masterminds as what Yawning Balch has brought into existence, one can only ever expect greatness to be born out of it. Success comes as no surprises from this volume as well as its predecessor with incredibly few others in the whole of the genre able to come together and put forth material that even comes close to what’s been achieved here. “Volume Two” is hopefully not the last that we’ve heard from this exceedingly talented meeting of the minds, and it hopefully won’t be long until this spectacular record passes the torch off to what will surely be another massive success for those behind Yawning Balch.
