Gula – Birds of the Apocalypse

It would be crass of any of us to try and deny the impact that psychedelia has had upon the human experience over the course of thousands of generations with modern music, in particular, one of the fields that greatly benefit from its use. It has single-handedly driven many sounds to take on some of their best, most impactful forms with its far-flung influence and utilization something that we still see to tremendous effect every day of the week be it in the form of metal or rock music, oftentimes the latter. Sometimes, we see the former take it on with even fewer instances offering a combination of the two. When such an event does occur, doom metal tends to be one hell of a beacon for such cosmonauts. For their latest excursion into the unknowable, Gula’s newest album is as brilliant example to such a combination that we are as likely as ever to experience.

Depending on the act, the lines of metal and rock begin to blur and fade together quite quickly for all intents and purposes. Without so much as a shred of hesitation and with all the purpose in the world, anything can be possible for those who are more than interested to see what can happen when you break down such barriers to really see what’s possible. For the whole of “Birds of the Apocalypse”, Gula does nothing but capitalize on such potential. In each of the eight tracks that are offered here, Gula puts forth an absolutely magnificent display of fluidity when it comes to both their execution of their particular craft that sees any and every boundary of their sound come crumbling down in a single note with everything that follows afterwards being a monolithic sight to behold that pierces the fabric of space right into the next dimension. As experimental as it is diverse and organic, “Birds of the Apocalypse” sees a clear core of doom come together with the desire to see it all come together in one form that is imposing yet no less than awe-inspiring to gaze upon with its vast expanses of wonders whose colors are constantly shifting as the land itself heaves to the very will and whim of Gula.

Interwoven with a gorgeous display that takes into account several factors that have always make psychedelic rock and doom metal powerhouses to respect for decades now, “Birds of the Apocalypse” accomplishes far more than one might expect from this Dutch act that is still largely flying under the radar. For all that has brought to the table for this work, Gula has poised itself to truly do great things should it follow the blueprints that “Birds of the Apocalypse” has put forth in great detail. The underground has always been rife with unknown talent, and any excavator who comes upon Gula should consider themselves lucky for discovering such a wonderful find.
