Abyssal Tomb – Buried

There really is no school like the old school. It’s what people always fall back on when they feel as though all else fails and they can’t see any other pathway forward even if that likely isn’t the case. Death metal, in particular, has been a stout devotee to the ways of its classic veins with acts new and old still perpetuating that old flame with some doing it immense justice while other fail spectacularly in hollow attempts to reanimate that greatness we all know. At any given time, there are new acts constantly crawling out of the woodwork to give us their own renditions of death metal to really give the underground a constantly active base for us to sift through. With their own debut effort, Abyssal Tomb has taken the lessons from the old school and put them all to great use in just five tracks.

I can wholly understand where some people come from when they say they want their metal to go against the grain even if it’s just a little bit in order to make thing a tad spicy, but there’s always something to be said for those who manage to do something that’s arguably simply but done incredibly well. In no small way, death metal has been one of many beacons in the vast spectrum of metal for such a concept with bands like Abyssal Tomb offering more than enough credence to keep such efforts perpetuating the old school veins in such a way that ensures they’ll be preserved for decades to come. “Buried” is but the first work from Abyssal Tomb, yet it accomplishes everything that one could ask for out of such a creation. Straightforward but no less than incredibly effective in its savage craft, the five tracks of this EP are as competent in their songwriting with immense riffs as they are devilish in their dealings to rise the long-forgotten dead bereft of light to walk once again upon the weak and living with “Buried” compelling them forward as their grime slowly coats the globe. A tremendous display that acts as an extremely interesting foundational base for Abyssal Tomb to build off in the future, “Buried” can easily be overlooked but I implore any and all old school enthusiasts to investigate this piece for there is mastery to be had in not rocking the boat with Abyssal Tomb making up for that with talent and power unbound.

With a clear vision that is very much so something that we’ve seen hundreds if not thousands of times, Abyssal Tomb could have very easily fumbled at any point during the creation of this behemoth to take an unfortunate turn. Evidently, however, Abyssal Tomb is not messing around for so much as a millisecond. “Buried” practically has it all from its riffs to its attitude; it signals the beginning of something that demands to be heard in the nasty thicket that is the death metal underworld.
