At any given point in time, there is a select few out there in the sprawling world of technical death metal that are making waves or, at the very least, rising from nothingness with everything to prove in a sound that has become extremely cutthroat in recent years. It’s such that now if a new band is to come forth and hope to make any sort of impact, they need to show they mean business practically right out of the gate with their material of the kind that immediately pulls people in and never once relents. In a sound as talented as technical death metal, such bands are surprisingly common with there being a pretty steady stream of new names from one year to the next that warrant more than a mere cock of an eyebrow. With its debut, Abyssius certainly qualifies as such.
By nature, technical death metal can be likened to progressive metal as it isn’t often that we see the sound stand on its own without any sort of implementations taken from other sounds to be injected into the overall concoction. For their own creation, Abyssius doesn’t go against the grain in that regard with their aural assaults consisting of plenty atmospheric passages while always making sure to keep its death metal nigh-on eviscerating from the very start as this is an eponymous work that put the act’s best possible foot forward to already show they mean business. We’re only given six tracks for Abyssius to hit its mark, yet it is at every given turn that this international act makes damn sure to do just that! With a level of polish that is to be expected from a worthwhile effort of the style while ensuring a raw nature that enhances the death metal even further, the themes of self-preservation through the most intense nihilism is fitting for such a piece as Abyssius captures such a concept to immense effect. There’s still tons of room for Abyssius to expand its talent and sound to really become a force that cannot be denied, but to say that they’re an act to skip would be an extreme disservice to what’s put forth in this admirable debut. Everything you could expect to find from a modern work of technical death metal is to be found all over this creation even as Abyssius finds itself taking its first steps into a scene that has no time or space for the weak.
Plenty was proved in this effort, and Abyssius shows off at every turn that they are only just beginning. Whatever it is that’s to come next, this self-titled work is the perfect jumping-off point for a run in the world of technical death metal that we’re sure going to want to be a part of.
