Death metal is one of those sounds that, by all accounts, is made to not leave anything on the table or hold anything back unless it’s for real dramatic effect. We’ve seen tens of thousands of different acts come around that try their best to bring about those very tendencies in their own particular ways, but there is a select minority that, no matter how large that group might relatively be, always seems to stand out. This is the death metal that bends the mind’s comprehension of reality itself and is always seeking glory in all sorts of directions no matter where the path in question leads. Seemingly taken those concepts to the very core of what they’re about, Defect Designer has stood as a testament to that with their newest offering possibly the most imposing embodiment yet.
Out of the gate, it needs to be made clear that what Defect Designer has put forth here is far more than a simple extension of what they accomplished within their last EP from not two years ago. “Chitin” is a monolithic beast of Lovecraftian-like madness the likes of which is virtually impossible to truly pin down. An obvious creation of death metal, that’s where things take a voracious turn for the chaotic and simply unpredictable as it’s for the entirety of these twelve tracks in which Defect Designer is on a constant crusade to drive you insane. No two songs are quite the same with nothing off the table when it comes to where “Chitin” will take you next be it a brief less-than-one-minute bout of a surprisingly whimsical free spirit, grandiose death metal with a titanic progressive edge that only furthers the madness, or a straightforward approach to evisceration that still manages to leave you stunned for all of its macabre details as the viscera becomes one with the air itself. By and large, “Chitin” is meticulously crafted to be a supreme offensive that is not easy to overcome by any stretch of the imagination, yet Defect Designer always finds a way to make it engaging, compelling, and even a little fun in more than one instance.
Where many see death metal as a rigid experience with only one conclusion in sight, Defect Designer seeks a frenetic experience that holds nothing back, takes you places you normally don’t witness in the realms of death metal, and brings it all together in magnificent form. By and large, Defect Designer has made an imposing labyrinth whose halls are always shifting with all that is “Chitin”.
