Dark creations that really channel the occult and all things that reside in darkness is what the vast majority of black metal is made for, and I don’t think many of us would change that for anything. While there are times that the sound can become tedious for the lack of originality that can persist in many of its veins, there are always bands out there that are able to do real justice for the sound where everything feels fresh, interesting, and invigorating right from the beginning as their shrouds of dark glory cover all. The underground is constantly being supplied with acts like this with Black Sorcery being one of the freshest to do bring naught but excellence to its particular corner of black metal.

By no means did Black Sorcery seek to break new ground within black metal for this effort, but it is at every given turn that this Rhode Island act knew precisely what they were going for and precisely how to deliver it in such a form that cannot be seen as anything short of devastating and downright effective in its dark craft. For all that’s brought forth within the nine tracks of “Deciphering Torment Through Malediction”, the raw approach and devilish identity of Black Sorcery is made apparent in every minute no matter how the act seeks to deliver its intensities be it through acoustic passages, bare-bones riffs born through esoteric tortures, or through unyielding hatred that is always part of the driving force behind the record from beginning to end. Never failing to utilize everything about their sound from the quality of the production itself to the themes constantly at play, “Deciphering Torment Through Malediction” is something that should catch the fancy of any black metal fan that doesn’t like things too complex but also never once resorting to simply ripping off some great performance that has come before to use to their advantage. Rather, it is in each track throughout this debut that Black Sorcery uses their very obscurity to their advantage to make for a performance that’s cold, unrelenting, and downright nefarious in more than a few instances to make it a slab of black metal that truly takes the core ideals of the genre to heart.

Where the density of the black underground itself can easily be seen as a hinderance to its own quality for many, excavations into its depths will reveal noteworthy acts that are doing good by ways of the genre at large with there always being acts worth searching for if you put in the legwork. Easily, Black Sorcery qualifies as such an act. The darkness is the home for bands like this, and it’s with that very essence of night that “Deciphering Torment Through Malediction” wove its own form into existence to present us with a monstrous presence that holds nothing back and leaves nothing to chance.
