Deaf Wolf – Not Today, Satan

No matter what sound we’re talking about, the underground is constantly populated with small bands looking to make their own mark upon the scene or, at the very least, throw down material that they themselves can be proud of whether or not it is received well. Rock, in particular, is always in a state where there are thousands upon thousands of young acts looking to take up their own little corners in a sprawling scene that stretches well beyond the horizon seemingly without end. Many tend to thrive in obscurity and never reach further than their hometowns, but it’s every so often that one rises to the challenge to present a work that could really open doors for the band. In the case of Deaf Wolf with their forthcoming creation, we may very well be looking at such a name.

In every form, Deaf Wolf is the sort of rock that the whole of the genre is constantly building itself off of. The spirit of the genre runs thick in the veins of these musicians who have a down-to-earth feel to every bit of their material that enables them to really play a dynamic role throughout the whole of their new album, “Not Today, Satan”, even if the very nature of such a thing prevents them from becoming a performance that would rock anybody’s perception of what music can be. That being said, there’s nothing about these twelve tracks that are to be looked down upon. Each track has its own clear identity with plenty of hooks and themes to catch your attention and hold it for the entirety of its length as Deaf Wolf is a chef whose cuisine is sonic excellence through a mildly heavy performance that takes more than a few keys from what the stoner rock scene as a whole as accomplished, but never once allowing its sound to become some dull knock-off. Still managing to have more than a little bit of soul while having a damn good time and ensnaring everyone around in the emotions and thrills that are rife through the whole record, Deaf Wolf has put forth a surprisingly three-dimensional performance that never once limits “Not Today, Satan” to become some boring act that should stay well within its respective garage studio. Rather, “Not Today, Satan” takes on a life that I wasn’t expecting when diving into its twelve chapters.

This is the kind of rock that should encourage people to keep the sound alive no matter what. Everything that’s put into this record is what has always made the genre such a treat for several decades now with acts like Deaf Wolf almost always the reason that we keep coming back whether we find such acts in their infancy like here or after they potentially make it big.

“Not Today, Satan” releases on April 5th!
