They Came From Visions – The Twilight Robes

Any effort that’s able to work outside of the box even a little bit and manage to tap into success is what it means to not just catch the attention of new listeners, but to hold them without issue for the entirety of your performance. That’s a concept many bands try to bring to the table album after album with only the best able to deliver it in any meaningful capacity, but some are able to do it virtually as easy as breathing. When They Came from Visions first came around, the seeds of offbeat excellence were planted, and it’s only with this new effort that those seeds have sprouted brilliantly.

For all the representation that horror has in the vast spectrum of metal music, folk horror is something that we don’t see often enough purely because it is a difficult thing to pull off. To maintain the core values of such concepts and imbue them into your medium is to really achieve something. Clearly, They Came from Visions understood that from top to bottom with all that they’ve summoned forth from “The Twilight Robes” embodying much of what one could ask for from folk horror. From being immensely off-putting but no less than intoxicating right at the beginning to offer a dynamic and intense listen that has much more to offer than what I think most would be expecting normally, “The Twilight Robes” is a dark but engrossing effort that is ever so sweet to dive into even as you know you’ll come face-to-face with undeniable madness. With more than a little bit of influence of the war raging within the home country, the terror and existential dread of the record feels especially potent as They Came from Visions does far more than talk a big game and hope to stumble upon a path to success. Rather, “The Twilight Robes” is a methodical climb that tells the tale of the soil itself that would surely preach of blood and hellfire if it could speak. Unlike much of what black metal is able to bring forth and always making sure to leave a great impact on your psyche while making damn sure you flesh is permanently scarred if not peeled right off the bone altogether.

Where black metal becomes a place that not many of us expect our darkest societal fears to be lying in wait there are always a few lurking in the shadows to bring their own brands of chaos to the surface the likes of which can be likened to extremely few others. Quickly, They Came from Visions has established itself as just such an act that demands to be have a close eye kept on at all times. With all that’s brought to the table for “The Twilight Robes”, it’s obvious that this act has lot of more going on underneath its anonymous visage that is not easily swept aside.
