Never will it cease to amaze me how we still find ourselves in a time where any given style of music is self-perpetuating so long as we keep being blessed by the passionate and persistent. Even in the face of those who would say that any given sound has become stale or has outright died in recent times, those of us who still put in the work to comb through the vast undergrounds will know that couldn’t be any further from the truth. Luckily, the different realms of stoner music have never been in doubt from what I can tell with its diverging veins still inspiring and captivating many to this day. It’s because of bands like Volt Ritual that such a truth can remain a constant.
As much as I am always a fan of sprawling creations that really challenge the mind as to what any given sound is capable of in the best hands, there is nothing wrong with a simpler creation that isn’t much more than a band simply doing their thing at their own pace as they know how. Volt Ritual is still very much so a smaller name in the grand scheme of things, but it is already apparent in their latest EP that they have more than enough understanding of their craft to not just put forth a competent effort that’s interesting to listen to, but a work that is a real joy to experience. Four tracks are all that adorn “Return to Jupiter” but it is within the 22-minute runtime that Volt Ritual manages to put a real down-to-earth tone throughout the whole of the work while managing to incorporate more than a few cues from the styles related to the core of stoner doom that we’re working with here. Notes from the likes of space rock and heavy psych find their way into “Return to Jupiter” to ensure that this is an EP that has more than enough flavor and character to not just keep the listener engaged, but coming back time and again to experience the riffs and the glory with which Volt Ritual throws down seemingly without breaking so much as a single sweat.
It hasn’t even been two full years since the first creation from Volt Ritual saw the light of day, but it is already with “Return to Jupiter” that the Polish quartet poises itself to take off to interstellar heights. Creations like this are why we always find ourselves coming back to the glory of stoner music no matter what’s been done by who as there is always some fresh avenue of foggy magnificence to be discovered through riffs and tripping out. In no small way, Volt Ritual exemplifies that.
