Scarefield – A Quiet Country

It’s quite often that people view metal music through an incredibly nostalgic lens that is always desiring for there to be a proper perpetuation of that classic feel that many of us grew up with even if it can be something that only a select few are able to pull off in any meaningful capacity, much less those who are able to do it real justice. Thrash metal, in particular, suffers from a lack of competency in many modern instances even if it is one of the wider and more influential veins of metal. In only a few occasions is that original style given glory by a band that comes around with real passion and ingenuity to continuously make things interesting. By and large, Scarefield achieves just that with their debut album.

There are tons of influences and sources of inspirations that have always made thrash metal a tremendous and spontaneous scene for several different reasons, and horror media is absolutely one of them. It’s a magnificent driving force with all of its imagery and menagerie of forms with thrash, much like death metal, a powerful vessel to deliver such intensities. Scarefield obviously understood that as they sat down to craft their first effort, and it’s through a clear reverence for where the worlds of thrash and power metal intersect that “A Quiet Country” takes magnificent shape. Eleven tracks of electrifying metal that knows the precise kind of speed, melody, and terror to put forth, Scarefield certainly makes one hell of an entry onto the scene! From beginning to end, “A Quiet Country” is downright surgical in its craft as it shows off a complete understanding of how to deliver this particular brand of thrash that we simply don’t get to see often enough with quality works of such happening even less often to the result of this album standing out even more so. Utterly infectious and competent to a tee, Scarefield still has room for improvement, sure, but just to bear witness to this record is to see that we’re already dealing with a band that is nothing to underestimate in the slightest. Grabbed by the throat and not given so much as a chance for survival, the listener is hurled into a ferocious whirlwind that’s centered around a simple but powerful truth: “A Quiet Country” is the seemingly unassuming work that works in the shadows that seeks your blood.

Every so often are we granted works that do the classic veins immense justice by new blood, and what Scarefield has accomplished here is more than worthy of being dubbed one of the most promising works of thrash in recent times that knew exactly what it’s target was, how to execute the plan to terrifying effect, and how to make an immense spectacle out of it. Where terror and splendor come into play, “A Quiet Country” does not squander its opportunity.
