Dödsrit – Nocturnal Will

For all that goes on within the seemingly endless depths of the underground, it’s passion that drives everything forward. From that singular point of real fervor can magnificence take place with those capable of growing and evolving their sound to become something greater almost virtually almost all but guaranteed to put on a tremendous performance. There are legions of bands out there that are qualified for such a description, and Dödsrit is effortlessly deserving of being hailed as such. A growing name in the underground, Dödsrit is the embodiment of what it means to constantly push your sound to new heights yet never forgetting where you came from with their fourth album almost surely their best yet.

From the first album that was unleashed upon the world in 2017, Dödsrit has been on a constant upward trend. Not like many other black metal acts that see them becoming colder and oftentimes more primal in their craft, Dödsrit took the path of becoming more refined and, dare I say, more grandiose in their sound to really make use of the longer compositions that easily stretch over ten minutes in length. Already, Dödsrit was nothing to underestimate, yet it’s with “Nocturnal Will” that we really see the Swedish act take on a form that is simply difficult to wretch yourself away from. The record channels much of what the genre is constantly trying to tap into with the nostalgic vein of black metal running thick within these six tracks with more than enough of a modern mindset, respect, and ingenuity to ensure that it becomes much more than a mere imitation. Rather, Dödsrit shows us just how adept they are at this approach with “Nocturnal Will” constantly reigning victorious! Atmospheric and intense while never once missing out on the chance to bring forth some compelling riffage to really seal the deal, this is an album that covers much of what makes the wide spectrum of black metal such a treat as we know it today. Where many others would have struggled with such a concoction, Dödsrit proves to us for the fourth time in a row that they are just not a name to be dismissed.

Where the absolute passion for black metal intersects with the drive to see what you’re able to deliver even after putting forth a handful of albums that are more than respectful in their own rights, “Nocturnal Will” is a glorious addition to a growing discography that has yet to see a single weak effort. Their reputation has only grown higher along with their skill to further cement the simple fact that they are absolutely a name the black metal scene at large should respect, and Dödsrit should take immense pride in those accomplishments.
