The Last of Lucy – Godform

It’s obvious to say that the recent years have seen technical death metal gain a firm chokehold on a large swathe of the death metal underworld. While I don’t mind that, I know that there are some out there who find it a little annoying maybe not so because of the sheer presence of the scene but simply because many of the acts tend to sound very much the same at some point. It’s an unfortunate truth that many of us don’t like to admit, but I believe that is slowly changing with many really finding their own paths through the mirth of technicality and insanity to really show us what’s possible in a sound that was born out of pushing the very boundaries of death metal itself. Barely two years since their last effort, The Last of Lucy stands as a tremendous testament to that with their third full-length album another formidable beast that is not to be underestimated in the slightest.

Since the dawn of technical death metal, it’s always been a creation that is constant in its aggression and unrelenting in its progressive nature that is always taken to the brink. After some time, bands have been to inject contrasting tones and occasional atmosphere and dissonance to really show us another side of what technical death metal can be. Striding that very line with true mastery, The Last of Lucy has been a growing name whose power is nothing to take lightly with all that’s presented within “Godform” the culmination of their prowess that immediately sets them apart in a scene that is incredibly competitive. An absolutely devastating creation that is heaping in the ways of technicality that seeks the very light of your soul, it’s the smaller moments where The Last of Lucy pulls back that really make “Godform” that absolute feast for the senses that it is. There’s nothing that can compare to being utterly pummeled by unbridled musicianship that holds nothing back before offering a devious reprieve driven by a saxophone to really throw you off only to quickly throw you back into the fire where your very consciousness melts in an instant. A true whiplash of an experience, “Godform” is an album that takes its name very literally as The Last of Lucy continues to grow in power with it being very evident with these ten tracks that they will not be sated until all of creation bows before them. At this rate, it won’t take long.

This is a scene that is particularly potent for obvious reasons, but it becomes all the more evident when you take into consideration the raw talent that is to be found around practically every corner. The Last of Lucy quickly showed us what they were made of with “Moksha” just two years ago, and it’s clear that they’ve no intent on staying still for long with everything that’s on display within “Godform” nothing that’s to be looked down upon. Where there is beauty there is absolute horror, yet you cannot help but fall ever further into the miasma within which The Last of Lucy holds complete dominion.
