For all things that can be accomplished in the modern world of brutal death metal, standing out is something that can oftentimes be difficult throughout the scene. Much like how it can be very much the same case within contemporary scenes like black metal, there is a large portion of the brutal death metal world that simply feels one-dimensional and uninspired. Seemingly more obsessed with going as loud and hard as possible with little to no substance, this is a sound that can be quite deceiving. Once you begin to pull back the layers, though, you find bands that are able to really bring the style forth in such a way that cannot be seen as anything less than interesting. Cutterred Flesh is effortlessly among the best of those acts given their rise in recent years, and their forthcoming record only cements that reputation.

When we’re dealing with a sound that is already as uncompromising as brutal death metal, one obvious path forward would be to take a turn towards the more progressive and technical lest you chance losing out on your overwhelming intensity. A few bands have begun to make that transition here and there with few as competent in the transition as what Cutterred Flesh has shown itself to be capable of with their sense of humor still a significant part of the overall feel of their works without becoming an eye roller of an ingredient. The Czech act has been honing their devilish skills in recent years with this record, “Love at First Bite”, the next step the band was destined to take given their trajectory up to now. For all that they’ve been building up to, the ten tracks within this utterly pulverizing work feels like the culmination of what happens when a sound that can be as constrained as brutal death metal gets real life and passion breathed into its deepest crevices. Quickly does such an entity rise with real power and Cutterred Flesh makes it clear very quickly that they’re more than happy to wield such terrific forces! This is the undeniable result when a real, meaty sound mates with that overwhelming will to go for the throat every single time without wasting so much as a second in its horrors while somehow making damn sure that it is a sight that few can rip themselves away from. You wouldn’t expect such a visage to be found in the depths of brutal death metal, yet it is with every given facet of “Love at First Bite” that Cutterred Flesh brings so much personality, girth, and flavor into a sound that can quickly be labelled as stale.

Where even some of the biggest bands in the sound can feel as though they miss the mark every so often, names like Cutterred Flesh are slowly but surely becoming names that we can rely on. No amount of brutality or complete dominance is lost as Cutterred Flesh makes their ascension with the very arrival of “Love at First Bite” sure to clear the path totally to show the masses that this is not some one-and-done unit that is going to loosen their grip anytime soon.
