For all that it has become in recent times, there is nothing that can ever hope to come close to what has transpired within the realms of progressive and technical death metal. We’ve been spoiled to an absolute litany of different bands coming out of the woodwork to try their hand at crafting evermore crazy death metal that really pushes the boundaries of what the style is capable of with a surprising amount consistently able to keep the bar rising to ever higher heights. As such, there are loads of names looking to make an impact with there almost always a constant stream of new talent for us to sift through. With their second album, Swelling Repulsion makes a great push towards that very goal.

When we’re dealing with acts like this, it can be easy to become swept up in the idea of yet another glorious new name in the land of mind-bending death metal like we’re dealing with here such that even some lackluster names can find their way in the limelight. In the case of Swelling Repulsion, however, we need not have any sort of reservations as they are absolutely the real deal that demands to be hailed as such. While there’s still more than enough room for the act to improve upon its sound with occasional moments that feel clunky or disjointed, there’s nothing that can be denied about the insanity of “Fatally Misguided”. A constantly writhing creation that encapsulates much of what modern death metal of this variety has become from its dissonant, progressive, technical, and even psychedelic tendencies all coming together to ensure that Swelling Repulsion isn’t just a mere blip on the radar but, rather, an entity whose presence cannot be simply ignored. Potent from the beginning and damn near trance-inducing with the very beginning and very end of the record seamlessly blending into each for a constant, displacing vortex of sheer madness, “Fatally Misguided” is a work that opens many doors for Swelling Repulsion.

The very walls of reality begin to erode before the like of Swelling Repulsion, and one can only shudder at the very prospect of what this act is able to bring forward with much of it absolutely born out of what has made this sound such a compelling style for a very long time now. The possibilities are seeming endless with all that “Fatally Misguided” has presented us with. Swelling Repulsion merely needs to seize the opportunity with both hands.
