In certain circumstances, a band is able to achieve something with their sound that incredibly few others are able to tap into or come even close to. The craftsmanship and raw skill that’s needed to bring such a creation to life is something that people are constantly clamoring for throughout the sprawling underground with many trying their best to bring about such experiences albeit immensely few able to come close to the goal at hand. Death metal, in particular, is a style that we see such a phenomenon trying to occur pretty constantly. It’s only on occasion that we’re given great visions that are able to live up to such high concepts. For their second album, Construct of Lethe goes well and far beyond expectations in every sense.

There’s so much happening in a work like this that it almost makes it hard to talk about simply because of how dense every given aspect is. From the themes to the stylistic approaches to the sheer variance in sounds that come together to make this far more than a work of visceral death metal, Construct of Lethe offers no amnesty, peace, or solace for anyone who finds themselves within the absolute beast that is “A Kindness Dealt in Venom”. Writhing with themes of suicidal depression and the dark thoughts that come from such a mindset, this album lurches forward one track after the next through ethereal dimensions that come seamlessly as the twelve tracks were designed to be experienced in a single listen as an overarching experience that is more than capable of knocking you down to your lowest point, but it is then able to allow you the most primal of catharsis thereafter. This is death metal that has been twisted well beyond a shape or form that many of us would recognize in any other circumstance with Construct of Lethe showing off a capacity and understanding of their undulating sound that immediately puts them a cut above much of their competition. As vicious as it is tear-inducing, “A Kindness Dealt in Venom” cannot be understated for all that it seeks to encapsulate and bring to the table.

What’s left of your spirit by the end of it all is a hollow shell of what you once were with the magnificence of Construct of Lethe all that’s keeping you tethered to this realm even after the near-transcendent journey that the band put your flesh and soul through. This is a unique creation that is sure to cause ripples throughout the underground for all the right reasons, and I’d be quite shocked if they very name of Construct of Lethe isn’t considered one of the hottest names of the year after this album makes impact. For all that “A Kindness Dealt in Venom” brings forth, mediocrity is far from one of them.
