Mitternacht – Blasphemous Warfare

Littered is the underground with aspiring acts that have yet to see much of the light of day if any at all. As such, we are given an absolute ocean of bands out there that the vast majority of us have never heard of and likely never will purely because of how dense the underground can become even when dealing in quality that deserves to be lifted up as an example of what excellence can still be wrought. In the darkness of obscurity do many acts thrive with their own acts of darkness that embody the very best of what the underground has to offer. After a rework of its demo, Mitternacht poises itself to be become an act of black metal that demands respect even if it is to remain largely unknown.

A demo of black metal far from unexpected in the modern landscape that the style finds itself in with loads of bands from all over the world ensuring that black metal isn’t just perpetuating itself in all of its different forms, but it always has something to offer for those that can’t get enough of what writhes on the very floor of the underground. Primitive and no less than the definition of raw, bands like Mitternacht are what have always formed the niche but sprawling base of the underground that has always allowed throngs of bands to operate in a shroud of mystery. With an alternative mix to breathe fresh life into its sole demo, Mitternacht offers us nothing but prime black metal with “Blasphemous Warfare”. Three tracks are all that adorn this demo, yet it is in every given track that Mitternacht offers a magnificently icy approach to their stripped-down brand of black metal that’s as close to as natural as the sound can become without outside influence or aspirations to transform into some lofty effort that lost sight of the original vision of black metal itself. Simplistic but no less than magnificently deadly in its approach, “Blasphemous Warfare” cannot be denied for what it brings to the table in a short amount of time with the prospect of further onslaughts from Mitternacht something that really seems to warrant great excitement.

Long has the basement of black metal been overflowing with acts that are inundating us with demo after demo with the sheer volume of it all simply impossible to keep up with as they just keep coming, but it’s every so often when we see a worthwhile piece are we remembered why it’s still important to lose ourselves in the deluge. Mitternacht is poised to do great things in the darkness of the underground if “Blasphemous Warfare” has anything to learn from. I just only hope it won’t be too much longer before we hear new material from the shadowy act.
