Quine – s/t

It’s where the creative turn upon the underground that we really begin to come upon work that is nigh on interesting. While there is always more than enough room for the works that blow our mind and really show us what can happen when you constantly and consistently go above and beyond expectations, there’s always greatness to be had for those acts that are still very much so feeling out their own path. Debut records capture that essence in a purer form more than anything else, so it’s only a matter of coming upon such works that we can see what can still be done. Far from the craziest work that I’ve seen but undeniably intriguing in what it brings forth, Quine’s first effort is certainly a step down a path I’m keen to travel down.

A humble beginning can oftentimes be the start to greatness should the talent seize the opportunity, and while I will not claim to be a far-seer knowing what the future holds in store for Quine, I know that what they’ve summoned for this eponymous debut has more than enough room for improvement and loads of potential so long as Quine manages to tap further into what they’ve begun with here. Taking an approach brought about with no guitars and only bass for strings, Quine puts forth a metal-in-spirit creation that explores progressive rock in more of its brooding tendencies with dark atmospheres and deeper meanings to be found for those looking to discern the lyrics and really understand the soul of Quine itself. Surprisingly rhythmic and with more than a little bit of groove that catches the listener off-guard in practically every given instance, this is a record that lays the foundation for an approach that can really blossom into a progressive work that intrigues, enchants, and mystifies should Quine only further hone its craft into something that can really captivate.

In any instance, what Quine has put forth here is prime real estate for greatness should the Minsk act know how to capitalize on it and expand. What’s put forth here may not be much to some, but I cannot help but see the potential and the promise in such an approach to progressive rock with notes taken clear out of the sound’s metal counterpart in order to become something that’s a real eyebrow-raiser. Quine is as fresh as they come, and I can only hope that time is kind to such burgeoning talent.
