Mammoth Volume – Raised Up By Witches

It’s as they say: variety is the spice of life. It’s one thing to take your sound and twist it in different forms into all sorts of twisting directions in order to take your own spin upon your style of choice while always keeping the listener guessing precisely as to whatever it is that’s to come next. That’s something that is far easier said than done, of course. We’ve seen throngs of acts come around that try and bring their own flavors to the mix only for the final concoction to become a jumbled mess of different factors trying to outplay each other to little avail. Mammoth Volume has always been constant, however. A truly eclectic act that knows no bounds, it’s with their forthcoming piece that we see that in great detail possibly more so than ever before.

One cannot stress enough how hard it is to pull off an album like this no matter how naturally it may come to others. It’s a persistent tugging and pulling in contrasting directions with all the different styles, themes, and approaches that are taken throughout the piece to really make it a fluid creation that’s not easily likened to anything else. In the rare case of an act like Mammoth Volume, to go against the grain and perpetually leave the listener on the edge of their seat in anticipation for whatever is to come next, it comes as easily as breathing. “Raised Up By Witches” is no less than a glorious continuation of that deep out-of-the-box understanding of the funky, weird, and outgoing reaches of progressive rock that are simply not given enough credit. Each of these nine tracks are amazingly distinct as Mammoth Volume seems to go out of its way at every given opportunity to give us a new insight into their collective influences and artistic vision that all come together for a tremendous work of bubbling progressiveness that can just as easily be supremely intoxicating, meandering, and meditative all while holding this constant sense of wanderlust that never diminishes even after losing yourself within “Raised Up By Witches” for hours on end.

An exceedingly organic creation that is ever-shifting and never once settles on one corporeal form, “Raised Up By Witches” is another testament to the simple fact that Mammoth Volume is one of the genre’s most fascinating, engaging, and incorporeal acts that knows its craft inside and out. Where many have sought to reaches these sort of heights, it’s only fitting that Mammoth Volume continues to be a caliber above the rest even after all these years.
