For all that can still be done within the sprawling confines of the metal spectrum, it’s still not nearly often enough that a modern thrash band can come around and bring to the table something of real interest. Oftentimes, it takes the mixing of it with another sound in order to really get the attention of listeners with even then few bands able to deliver in any sort of meaningful capacity that will keep us coming back for more. When a new name does come around with promise, though, it’s surely a sight that demands to be investigated. By and large, it’s the debut from Odious Spirit that deserves such a look with everything about the record promising a truly devastating future.

The best kinds of works in a style like this are those that extrapolate many of the core ideals of the sound and contort them all to suit the horrific visages that plague the mind of its creator which are destined to be transmitted to our own ears, and it’s not often whatsoever that we see a band come around that manages to come even close to tapping into that very madness. In no small way, that’s precisely what faces one should you enter the flesh-strewn halls of “The Treason of Consciousness”. A deeply cynical creation that spits in the very face of the cycle of creation, destruction, and renewal that we are all unwitting prisoners of, this is an extremely dense creation that offers no sense of reprieve, peace, or salvation for any foolish enough hoping to find solace of any kind within these five monstrous tracks that Odious Spirit conjures from the void. Eviscerating in speed, unrelenting in its brutality, and utterly horrific in its themes, “The Treason of Consciousness” is what it means to take death-thrash to a realm many fear to venture to! Any and every horror play a critical role in propelling the album ever forward deeper into the most cavernous, primal pits of the human soul that is always yearning for the sweet embrace of the void with all the bliss that comes with not able to truly comprehend the joke that is consciousness itself with it all being delivered in such a package that peels the very flesh off your pathetic bones and drains any sense of free will you may foolishly cling onto. Brutal and unyielding in every form, “The Treason of Consciousness” is the debut the landscape of death-thrash is always in need of!

The very definition of what it means to put your listeners through a torturous experience with the most macabre of rewards at the end, Odious Spirit has set the bar incredibly high for itself right out of the very gate. A devilish work that wastes no time and never once leaves any survivors to tell the tale of the horrors they saw within these harrowing depths, “The Treason of Consciousness” is anything but for those with weak constitution.
