For all that can be done within the vast spectrum of black metal, few can deny how few and far between truly exceptional works can be when it comes to those works that embody the best of what the given style has to offer with all coming together for a fresh and invigorating experience. There’s loads of talent to be had, of course, but much of it can oftentimes be lost in the shadows of those who have come before. When an exceptional name does come around, it tends to spread like wildfire for all the right reasons. That’s precisely what happened with the debut from Wraithfyre whose pedigree and talent immediately makes for a record whose glory is not to be denied for an instant.
Just looking at what the mastermind behind Wraithfyre has done with loads of excellence thrown down in many of his different acts from Dwarrowdelf to Battle Born to Sojourner and it should be clear that we are dealing with a man that knows exactly what he’s doing. The very idea of such a mind tackling black metal that invokes the old masters that were around at the beginnings of the genre itself is something that should be quite exciting to envision with those hands more than capable of delivering high-end mastery. By and large, that’s precisely what was delivered within every given inch that’s to be found within “Of Fell Peaks and Haunted Chasms”. A simply enchanting listen that is constantly throwing down immense melodies and symphonies to craft a gorgeous tapestry the likes of which only black metal of this exquisite variety can ever hope to put together in such a magnificent form, Wraithfyre’s entrance is one that immediately makes one bow down in pure wonder. This is where the raw glory of the torchlit night comes into its own fully without compromise as Wraithfyre demonstrates complete understanding and mastery of the craft in every possible moment with the symphonies only further elevating the work to set the bar incredibly high for whatever it is that’s to follow with the riffs and magic overtones of this record ensuring that the work as a whole will be immediately cemented into the mind of those who lose themselves within the halls and amongst the mountains that birthed “Of Fell Peaks and Haunted Chasms”.
Sometimes, too many acts can compromise a musician’s sound as it can be difficult to differentiate between many of the acts unless that list is kept sparse and the acts in question left distinct in their sound. While the list for this mastermind has now gained another notch in its belt, the sheer power and magnificence of it all has yet to wane with the majesty and glory within “Of Fell Peaks and Haunted Chasms” speaking for themselves within each track we see here. There’s loads to be excited about in all that black metal has to offer with Wraithfyre certainly earning a place in that conversation.
