It would be an understatement for anyone to say that the future of straightforward heavy metal is something that we love to discuss for one reason or another. While there are rising bastions to show us what can still be done, there’s always more room for those underground acts that seek to bring their own flavors to the mix and show us how they too can represent that classic vein. Hailing from the frozen shores of Lake Erie, Tündra sought to do just that with its promising debut EP.
To try and bring something innovative to a genre like this, no matter what kind of band we’re dealing with, it can only be likened to trying to reinvent the wheel. Where many might only find stagnation and boredom within this long-established sound, there are those that are still able to inject real life through immense passion the likes of which can only be considered infectious. While there are only three tracks in this EP, it would just be plain incorrect to claim that Tündra didn’t tap into those very elements exceedingly well. Across just twelve minutes, “Tündra” accomplishes quite a bit despite being just the first steps for a band that is hoping to make a name for itself. Through ripping solos, a spectacular leading voice, and the undeniable spirit of heavy metal that bleeds through every given instrument in every given minute of the work, this is a quick and efficient showcasing as to what it means to be bring glory to the very spirit of heavy metal. We’ve seen plenty of newer names come around and try their hand at doing something interesting whilst trying not to fly too close to the sun. However, incredibly few have been able to throw it all down with real confidence, pull it off with spectacular results, and show us that there’s as much room for improvement as there is loads of space to stun and bewilder.
Promising in the name of Tündra! Three tracks are rarely anything to go off of, and while I will refrain from making any wild claim or speculations in regards to the future of Tündra, I simply cannot help but feel optimistic. Everything about this record points us in all the right directions for such an act with promise and potential the likes of which can make for a meteoric rise in the underground. It is simply too early to say, but it’s until we know more that “Tündra” is more than enough to keep the very name of Tündra fresh in ours minds.
