Sun & Sail Club – Shipwrecked

There are some people that just don’t know when to stop. While that can easily be a bad thing, there are plenty of scenarios where such a concoction can come around that impresses and surprises us for all that it manages to bring to the table, and the world of rock music is never lacking in such act if you simply know where to look. Nine years ago, we saw the arrival of a new supergroup in the world of rock that brought many worlds together for a palette that was fast, fresh, and ferociously invigorating. Now, after such a lengthy hiatus, Sun & Sail Club has returned with their third album to remind us precisely what they’re capable of.

Even just looking at everyone involved with this band and you should be able to tell in a mere instant that this was a group that was always destined for greatness with the fingerprints of each musician all over the modern realm of rock in different styles for years now. Sun & Sail Club stands as an oddity, somewhat, with its faster style and breakneck rhythms making for a much more intense experience than the most psychedelic, riff-filled pieces we associate these men with, and that certainly adds something of a surprise factor with a work like “Shipwrecked”. Eleven electrifying tracks that hold nothing back and bring forth some of the fastest material that I think we’ve seen from these musicians yet even across their menagerie of other acts, this is a work that embodies what it means to take a base of punk rock and infuse it with all the greatness, tact, and bounce that stoner rock has become all but synonymous with. Constantly moving things forward and never sitting still for long before throwing the listener into another whirlwind, “Shipwrecked” spits in the face of stagnation and peace with the very whole of this record giving the vibes of constant frustration with catharsis of a raw nature the only solution one could possibly be aiming for when crafting a record such as this. Furling out in all directions to ensure that the intensity is never pointed at a single source, but a wide variety of culprits, “Shipwrecked” makes damn sure you feel its fury.

Nine years is a long time by any account when it comes to the gap between albums, but given the high level of activity that each of these guys are always up to with their crazy schedules and legions of bands to play in, nine years can be an incredibly healthy time to recharge and think of new ways to attack your sound in a way that won’t feel stale or boring. By all regards, that very much feels the case as to what happened here within “Shipwrecked” with it sure to hit home with fans that have been waiting nearly a decade for the act to make its way back around.

“Shipwrecked” releases on October 18th via Heavy Psych Sounds!
