Oryx – Primordial Sky

A journey through heaviness is something that, in some form or another, many bands are striving for throughout the underground. To be able to craft your sound and have it evolve over time such that it is damn near unrecognizable from where it started out is something that several work to achieve with only the finest able to accomplish such a feat. Modern sludge metal is no exception from that rule with there being plenty of acts out there that have made such a transformation in stupendous fashion with Oryx absolutely being such a name. With their forthcoming piece, the term “magnum opus” is certainly on the table.

The sheer presence, magnitude, and hostility of sludge metal has always been a big part of the sound in every given form with recent times bringing forth quite a few names that have been able to take the sound in all sorts of different directions. However, to carve out a corner for your own with all the foundations of the sound intact despite your flavors and personality taking the stage far more often than not is to find yourself in a special echelon of whatever sound you may find yourself in. In the case of Oryx, it would be an understatement to say that the act has gone through a metamorphosis of sorts since its first outing. To step into the cavernous realm of “Primordial Sky” is to realize that truth in its entirety with the very whole of these four tracks offering a truly thunderous experience that peels apart the human condition itself and allows us a glimpse into the suffering and mental state of Oryx itself. The purest form of catharsis through intensity of all sorts, “Primordial Sky” sees Oryx at its truest with everything laid bare from its tendencies, atmospheres, riffs, fury, and sorrow all center stage for us to lose ourselves in. Multi-dimensional sludge metal that revels in all that it is and can be, Oryx has refined their feral craft to something of a macabre beauty.

Albums like this are what separate the up-and-coming acts to the connoisseurs of true magnitude. Oryx has been a name to know and respect as they rise through the underground for years now, and this record is everything that we’ve seen done before brought to life in such an exquisite and grandiose form that one cannot help but become wholly immersed in it. A dense listen that has much to offer, “Primordial Sky” is not something to take lightly.
