Esoctrilihum – Döth-Dernyàlh

For all that the vast underground has to offer, there is always a long list of names out there that are sure to come back around sooner rather than later and prove to us what they’re still able to throw down. Some acts are more persistent and active than others with even some of those defying expectations when it comes to how fast they’re able to dish out new material. For some time now, Esoctrilihum has absolutely been such an act with its otherworldly brand of black-death metal something of a sight to see more times than not. With its newest creation, a simple addition has made a world of difference.

To be aware of the best that this particular corner of the underground has brought forth in recent years is to be intimately familiar with Esoctrilihum. A French name that has seen tremendous expansion across several creations, each record offers some new insight or different approach to bring something interesting to the fold no matter how small or inconsequential such a decision may be. “Döth-Dernyàlh” is far from different in that regard. In its latest delve in the darkness that Esoctrilihum has hand-woven over many years, the seemingly benign addition of a 12-string acoustic guitar has opened a world of possibility for the already-accomplished entity. Across seven tracks that span well past an hour long in total, we see Esoctrilihum do what it does best with everything in the band’s arsenal of magical extreme metal on full display for us to become utterly lost in as the very layers of “Döth-Dernyàlh” peels apart before our eyes to reveal realms that only this conductor knows on such an intimate level. A tremendously dense web of melodies, suffering, hate, despair, and expertise in fascinating black-death metal that knows precisely how to be the most it can ever be in every possible moment, “Döth-Dernyàlh” is yet another chapter in the book of Esoctrilihum that the name should be immensely proud of.

While the output of Esoctrilihum has only increased with time, there’s always more opportunity for the act to expand its tentacles and offer us a different approach to its eldritch, voracious sound that has never once held anything back in any capacity with this album but another embodiment of that very concept. The consistency and intrigue of Esoctrilihum is always high especially when compared to many others out in the underground with “Döth-Dernyàlh” but another testament to that truth.

“Döth-Dernyàlh” releases on September 20th via I, Voidhanger Records!
