Despite the heaps of potential that the genre has boasted for a long time now, it feels all too common that bands come into the realms of black metal and tread the same ground over and over again tirelessly. There are, of course, times where bands manage to make something interesting as they travel down well-worn paths that still have possibilities for greatness even after so long, but sometimes bands aren’t able to hit the mark and show us what all can still be done. On the other side, though, there are names out there that are consistent in their delivery and always ready to demonstrate how its all done in excellence. With its second album, Hell is Other People steps up to the play to remind us.
To be a rising name in the underground is to find yourself amongst competition that can only be deemed extremely stiff. No matter where you look, there are always bands in your same position that are striving to deliver material undeniably similar even if your individual journeys are unique to you and you alone. That doesn’t defy the fact that oversaturation is absolutely something that can happen instantly without us even realizing it, and it takes a certain caliber of act to bring forth glory on a high level without really pushing the boundaries. With all that they brought to the table with “Moirae”, Hell is Other People shows us precisely what it means to deliver evocative black metal that is as capable of being a slow burn that as well as a blistering experience that scorches the soul itself. A beautifully dense creation whose songwriting is surprisingly complex despite not being overly progressive, “Moirae” pulls from this painful reality that offers no reprieve or solace as Hell is Other People carefully brings its sound together piece by piece to ensure that it is not just another work of black metal that’s to be lost in the underground, but, rather, it’s a creation that shows us precisely what can still be done when the sound is approached in the right way.
Far from a revolutionary work for the genre but nonetheless a work loyal to the core ideals of it all, Hell is Other People has delivered a piece that should absolutely be on the radar of any modern black metal fan. What’s done here taps into the finest of what black metal can always be with “Moirae” as a whole nothing that should be underestimated lest these five tracks take you by surprise and leave you suffering in obscurity.
