Melancholy has always played a magnificent role in a vast swathe of what doom metal has become over the years, and there is still nothing that can top the sound when its done right with the proper amount of power, tenacity, and potency for it all to come together in a singular gloomy vessel that’s constantly pushed by real suffering. Where many are able to tap into that sense, it still remains true that only the finest are able to execute those ideals in such a way that feel truly overwhelming when you find yourself before such a creation. Having made waves with their first full-length for doing just that, Invernoir is prepared to repeat that achievement with their second.
Of all that sounds have have graced doom over the decades, it’s this sound that stands out from all the rest. It’s a core pillar of the genre that has always propped the sound up to become the absolute beast of darkness and heaviness that we all know and love today, and while there’s still plenty of greatness to throw around, it’s not terribly often that we see a new name come around and manage to not just hold our attention but consistently impress. While their first album certainly made a splash, Invernoir is primed to deliver a true tsunami with all that they’ve conjured within the eight intoxicating tracks of “Aimin’ for Oblivion”. Excellence that derives much from the old school while always ensuring that things are kept fresh and invigorating such that the word “stagnant” has no place in sight of this perofmrance, Invernoir not only does their influences justice but the entire genre. Each track has something to call its own, the evocative nature of the record is simply overwhelming and damn near impossible to not be swept away by, and the sheer grandeur of it all comes together to make “Aimin’ for Oblivion” not just a wild success for Invernoir. It’s a testament to the tenacity of such a sound when it’s put in the right hands with Invernoir’s certainly those of masters, and we all but bow before such uncompromising prowess.
Hands down, this is what it means to beat witness to unyielding mastery in all that it can offer. Doom has no shortage of promising acts out there in its vast realms, but Invernoir has placed itself at the very forefront of all that it has for listeners with this creation absolutely something that must be on the radar of any who claim to be a fan of modern doom. “Aimin’ for Oblivion” more than lives up to its title and is all but destined to become a cult classic.
