It’s not an uncommon sight anymore to see black metal acts come around and really throw themselves into something even slightly different, but it’s not often enough that we see a band come around that manages to show us what really can be done with the sound in more ways than one. Post-black metal is something that catches the eyes of many yet isn’t always given the breadth and attention to detail that it deserves while consistently being material that is simply eviscerating in some form or another. For their second full-length album, Förfallet accomplishes what few others can.

While maintaining an air of dominance yet being vulnerable to enough to fall apart before the very listener in such a form that feels genuine and impactful, it can be quite challenging for any to balance all of those elements to make for an end-result that feels cohesive and satisfying at the same time. That’s what oftentimes separates the aspirants from the masters in this particular style of black metal with excellent examples few and far between more often than not. For all that brought to the table for “Ve”, it demands to be made extremely clear that Förfallet knew precisely what to do and how to bring it about in spectacular fashion. An uncompromising wall of evocative sound that leaves nothing on the table be it in terms of raw brutality or surprising rhythms that really help push the album forward into being an undeniable beast. Constantly brimming with ideas that feel immeasurably fresh when paired with the overwhelming nature of the music itself, “Ve” weaves an exceedingly dense tapestry of darkness that’s as detailed and nuanced as it is unyielding and diabolical. This is not black metal straight forward. Rather, this is black metal unbound where Förfallet can simply be with naught stopping them but their own ability, and it’s made clear very quickly in “Ve” that this is a band that’s wholly able.

Oftentimes it is the case that you don’t need to do something that’s wildly out-of-the-box or highly innovative to deliver something that people can really flock to. Sometimes, all you need is to follow your own path wherever it takes you and sometimes success will follow. From top to bottom and from beginning to end, it is with “Ve” that Förfallet has done precisely that and unquestionably came out on top with all that’s offered within this creation nothing short of magnificence.
