Much like what we see in the many different realms of metal, rock music has always been subject to oversaturation ever since it really started spreading across the globe as a phenomenon that can really entrance people like few other styles out there can. It takes the right approach and more than a little bit in ways of passion, talent, and creativity to be able to bring something forward that not only stands out from the crowd, but holds up and is capable of standing firm on its own two feet. Luckily, we live in an age were even if there are people who despair and claim that there’s “nothing new that’s good”, those of us with our eyes open know that just simply isn’t the case. With its forthcoming album, Deaf Lizard is living, breathing proof of that.
Again, like its metal counterpart, rock music is always something that’s shifting and contorting depending on the time period, where you’re at, the influences you’ve been exposed to; the list goes on! And yet, there is never a reason to seek the reinventing of the wheel if you’re able to bring something together that combines what it means to be efficient, satisfying, engaging, and oftentimes more than a little bit of fun. Channeling all of that and more with a fuzzy psychedelic of a breed that we’re all familiar with on one level or another, it’s in the seven tracks of “The Last Odyssey” that we see clear passion and tenacity manifest through riffs and tripping backdrops which could have very easily fallen apart in hands that weren’t immensely careful in what they were crafting. It’s every step along the way that “The Last Odyssey” is clearly a love letter to the classic forefathers of this genre with the doomsday-esque themes following suit as Deaf Lizard is constantly moving forward into the reeling horizon that is simply mesmerizing to gaze upon. Armed with a significant edge that grabs the listener right by the throat while the stars themselves beckon us onward toward oblivion after ages of wandering the cosmos searching for purpose, “The Last Odyssey” is a tremendous, expansive, and glorious slab of psychedelia that is an absolute joy to fall into.
Where many would only tap into what can be done with these long-performed concepts, Deaf Lizard makes it all feel fresh and invigorating. More than enough crunch and splendor to really put some hair on your chest, works like “The Last Odyssey” are what constantly push the genre forward while ensuring there is a clear thread to the style’s past that we just cannot ignore lest we lose the very soul of the sound itself. A rising name that has already made its own waves before, it’s here that Deaf Lizard has primed itself to become so much more.
