Typically, death metal is an inside-of-the-box genre that absolutely has its crazier sides, but it can certainly be argued that even in the more progressive and technical reaches of the sound that the genre as attained a certain level of expectation from its listeners. Not often enough are we witness to bands that try to do things different in just a few ways allowing mastery to creep in rather than massive creations seeking to do everything different even if such bold leaps can be seen as admirable. With a debut EP that consists of one 35-minute song with concepts, themes, and intensity to match such an interesting approach, Deamonolith makes itself known as a real eyebrow-raiser right out of the gate.
To deal with creations that consist of one long song is to normally find yourself within the realms of doom or sludge metal, but it’s every now and then that we see someone from outside those boundaries try their hand at doing so. Breaking the mold and really seeking to do something familiar but distinctly their own, Deamonolith makes their first performance something of a spectacle in all the right places with all that they’ve brought to the table for “The Monolithic Cult of Death”. While still making damn sure that they always have one foot planted in the cobweb-ridden tombs of death metal that we’re all intimately familiar with, it’s in the orchestral passages and the songwriting that the overwhelming presence of Deamonolith comes into play as we not only bear witness to the raw brutality that the act is more than capable of but the moments of almost gothic grandeur that allow the listener to pull back and see the full picture in all of its horror. More than adept at bringing for a wild display of intensity alongside captivating riffs and more than a little bit of atmosphere to add depth and density to a mix that could have easily fallen apart in lesser hands, it’s the whole of “The Monolithic Cult of Death” that exudes darkness unyielding while blood is but the only substance to be found within.
Not too far removed from what many of us have come to expect from death metal but still certifiably something in its own right that’s nothing to be denied in the slightest, “The Monolithic Cult of Death” is an imposing body of work that holds many splendors and wonders for any and all who would dare walk through its threshold to uncover what’s inside that darkness. Weaving a dense and deeply illustrated tapestry of the macabre, Deamonolith has certainly put their best possible foot forward to make an entrance that is more than worthy of all the attention it is to receive.
