Drune – Hornn

Not every band can move their sound forward in a big way in big leaps as we travel from one album to the next. Oftentimes, slow and steady is the key to success with small steps forward a sure path to success if you have sure footing and the will to see yourself reach the final destination one way or another. An album here or an EP there can make for a different no matter what your output rate is. Despite just putting out an EP last year, Drune demonstrates here that they don’t stay still for long with their prowess fittingly the same.

It’s hard for any band to ascertain greatness in just two tracks, but that doesn’t stop many from trying with those that are capable of doing so quickly proving themselves as names not to be denied nor taken lightly for all that they can clearly bring to the table. Drune already did that in last year’s EP, “Drown”, and now it is here in the 24-minute runtime of “Hornn” that we see them do it yet again for a display of sludge metal that is simply tantalizing and glorious to behold from beginning to end. A clear sign of their evolving sound, “Hornn” sees the inclusion of more synths amongst the heaviness that Drune has already become immensely proficient with as the evocative nature is a constant presence throughout the effort, acting as an anchor while the very heavens wretch back and forth in rhythm to the whim of Drune’s might. Sludge has become a sound that has gone through a bit of a metamorphosis in recent years with all sorts of bands coming out of the woodwork to show us what can still be done in the realm of raw intensity that cannot be likened to anything else out there, and bands like Drune are what keep things fresh, interesting, and nigh on fascinating to behold. Multi-dimensional and deceptive with its two tracks, “Hornn” is a work that demands to be respected.

As a rising name in the brutal game of sludge, Drune has become a name that raises interest every time they come back around. They may not be as active as others, but their output and its quality is nothing to be denied whatsoever as time has only proven to be a great boon for Drune. What could have easily just been a brief stop in the band’s adventure onwards, “Hornn” stands as a brief but competent piece that gives us a snapshot in the ongoing evolution of Drune itself.
