Much can change in what feels like no time at all. There are bands out there that manage to go years with a sound that remains virtually unchanged for one reason or another with the results predictably varying for every given reason, but the spectacles tend to rest on the acts throughout the underground that are constantly shifting and changing to their environments and experiences. Such an evolution can throw a path down a completely different path than from where they first started out, and it’s the unpredictability of it all that can make for a wild, unexpected release. During the crafting of its second full-length album, Codespeaker went through such a metamorphosis in just two years.
A lot can happen in what feels like the blink of an eye. Whether it’s a death or a simple change in lifestyle, things can always take a turn for the unexpected and it can be up to many factors whether or not it all results in a positive or negative outcome. With the interchanging of three out of the five members of Codespeaker since their first album two years ago, things could have effortlessly gone in either direction if but one choice was different. However, to gaze into the unyielding turmoil of “Scavenger” is to quickly realize that Codespeaker has certainly come out on top of a situation with virtually every given minute of this exceedingly pointed album something that post metal is always in dire need of. Overflowing with primal catharsis and far more aggressive than its predecessor, Codespeaker puts forth an utterly devastating display that cannot be deemed as anything less than overtly thunderous and all-consuming with the very light of day not safe from such raw power. The sort of jagged creation that leaves no room for error much less peace, “Scavenger” truly lives up to its name with it leaving the despairing feeling that you are to crawl through life in only the toughest of conditions where your flesh and soul are left to anguish on the scraps of this plane of existence in order just to get by, and Codespeaker delivers the undeniable fury of being in such a state. Elevating the craft of post-metal to an exceptionally high level of righteous fury, Codespeaker is quickly making itself known as a name to respect.
In a scene that seems dominated by a handful of names, it’s always refreshing and rewarding to see names rise out of nothingness to offer new experiences in their own ways that post-metal can certainly accommodate. For all intents and purposes, Codespeaker fits that bill tremendously. Much could have changed for the worst while “Scavenger” came into being, but Codespeaker has undoubtedly come out on top.
