Lowen – Do Not Go To War With The Demons of Mazandaran

Metal is a strange place at times. Perpetually, it’s a sound that revels in the clichés and well-worn styles that have been accomplished for decades now while also craving the marching forth of progressing the sound to something that is fresh and invigorating. At any given time, there are throngs of names out there that are claiming to do the latter and it varies from one person to the next as to whether or not that goal is accomplished. From the underground can an unexpected name rise for one reason or another, but it’s a rare sight that not many bear witness to lest they find themselves in the right place at the right time. When I came upon the latest album from Lowen, I certainly felt like I was in just the right place at just the right time.

While having taken their first steps in the world of psychedelia and doom metal in such a way that was already quite impressive, Lowen was not content to sit still in one place for long even if it meant shedding many of the tendencies and stylistic cues that they took in their first few years. A single step into this new effort would make one realize the metamorphosis that has undeniably taken place. Bigger, more imposing, and downright intoxicating while still maintaining Middle Eastern-inspired themes, it’s with their second full-length album that Lowen stands ready to dominate any and all who come before its might. Across an expansive six tracks, “Do Not Go to War with the Demons of Mazandaran” is a staggering listen of melodies, intensity, and streamlined power in such a way that feels like the force of a hurricane without exception as Lowen’s arsenal is on full display at all times. Intoxicating for all that they bring to the table with powerful vocals, pummeling strings, and exceedingly dynamic drumming alongside deeply intrinsic songwriting, what’s been laid forth here is nothing short of magnificence manifest. Many in the underground try to tap into greatness, but few come as close as quickly as we see within “Do Not Go to War with the Demons of Mazandaran”.

This album is of a sort that a band can really spring from and make something grand. Hell, even if Lowen is to make another wild shift in their sound with their next album, something tells me that it will undoubtedly be a sight to bear witness to given what this act has put forth already in such a short time. Whatever it is that comes next, one thing is for sure: “Do Not Go to War with the Demons of Mazandaran” is not to be underestimated lest its power wash over you like a great bloody flood.
