Molder – Catastrophic Reconfiguration

Perpetually, at any given moment, there are a select few bands out there in the vast overgrowth of the underground that are rising whether we’re aware of them or not. For those in the know, it’s a real treat to bear witness to such talent clawing their way through the darkness and showing us what they can really bring to the table with excellence that incredibly few others can match in some form or another. When it comes to death metal invoking the old school, we’re in no shortage of names doing so, but quality names can feel few and far between at times. As a beacon of undeath that has been rising in recent years, Molder’s third full-length album shows us precisely what many others simply cannot achieve.

While it was with their masterwork of “Engrossed in Decay” two years ago that really showed us what we were dealing with, the simple concept of Molder continuing that trend was more than enough to really get one excited as to what can still be done. It’s only been two years since that massive album was thrown down, but it is already with the arrival of “Catastrophic Reconfiguration” that Molder somehow refines its craft to something that invokes a primal, raw sensation as bile and blight rip through your flesh as they’re fueled by unyielding riffage and savagery. Even in its smallest moments, “Catastrophic Reconfiguration” is nothing short of an absolute menace upon the notion of all things peaceful, good, and filled with light in this world. Across a devastating ten-track work of evisceration, Molder does no less than bring the highest form of ripping glory to their influences and the masters of decades past with this exact breed of songwriting and craftsmanship enough that gets under the skin of all who bear witness to it, festering until it finally bursts forth in a horrific display of power that is utterly bone-chilling in its efficiency. From one riff to the next, “Catastrophic Reconfiguration” pulls no punches and leaves no survivors as Molder’s intoxicating fury cannot be contained nor can their particularly potent death metal be denied. To do so would be to spit in the face of pure mastery.

The sort of album that can really bring a band far, “Catastrophic Reconfiguration” is the all the proof one could need that Molder is the real deal that is not to be fucked with as though “Engrossed in Decay” wasn’t nearly enough proof of that. This is death metal unbridled and viciously honed. But rather than being a fine surgical edge, Molder’s breed of intensity is that of a well-worn axe’s edge, beating and battering its victims with intense force with the end-result nothing more than a warm stain of blood upon the blasphemed earth. In the midst of such gore, devastation, and waste of human life, Molder thrives!
