Few and far between can be the quality bands in black metal that seek to accomplish something more and ascend to heights that only the finest are able to ascertain. When one does come around, however, one can only hope that the act would be a consistent presence that manages to deliver excellence as time goes on, but, as you might expect, such an event does not happen often. As one of the few persistent acts that have remained consistent in that regard, though, Chaos Invocation has made quite a name for itself. Time has only honed their mastery and allowed them to really explore different avenues of their craft with their forthcoming fifth album being no different.

The second wave of black metal has a high level of reverence throughout the scene, and for good reason, with there still being loads upon loads of names out there hoping to further channel that dark glory in such a form that feels compelling, engaging, and fulfilling for all that it can bring to the table. As one of the more accomplished acts to have done so lately, the sheer magnificence of Chaos Invocation’s power has long been nothing to defy with each of their albums demonstrations of black metal that demand investigation, it should come at the surprise of no one familiar with the name that “Wherever We Roam…” only continues the band’s trends of excellence. A return to their more melodic side that is layered upon their focus on a direct assault upon the listener rather than relying on overly complex songwriting to really make for a potent listen that is still diabolical in nature even if Chaos Invocation takes the time to stop for brief moments at a time and take in the surroundings of the world they’re building. Immensely dense but undeniably accessible for any and every type of black metal fan out there, “Wherever We Roam…” hits on all the right notes in all the right places with its darkness, menace, and talent all coming together into one package the does a terrific job of looking to and revering the past in order for Chaos Invocation to find their own way forward.

There are always tons of acts out there looking to bring further magnificence to what’s been done before in their own ways, and it’s not often whatsoever that we’re able to bear witness to a display of power and prowess such as what we’ve seen from Chaos Invocation over the years. Always having been an act to respect from top to bottom with more than enough excellence to throw around in any given moment, “Wherever We Roam…” is the icing on this dark cake that makes it all somehow even sweeter to dig into. Where many have sought to hone their talent into real splendor, Chaos Invocation simply thrives.
