Ever since I first got into metal, the sheer diversity of it all is one of the greatest things that always intrigued me, and that still very much stands to this day. Even when talking about a specific style in the wide spectrum of metal, there’s so much going on and so many different approaches while still being well within the confines of a certain sound. There are plenty of sounds out there that effortlessly qualify with big ones like death, black, and doom metal easy contenders, but sludge has been on the rise of that diverse display with there being tons of names going around lately showing us how it can be done. As one of the newer names to make waves, it’s with their second album that Witchpit further stakes its claim as a band that simply should not be ignored.

While not nearly as bone-crushingly heavy or outright raw as some of the other sludge acts out there like Eremit or Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, there is always something to be said for those that manage to take a tempered approach that can still burst forth in raw outrages to offer us a brief glimpse into a different side of the band in question. Witchpit did that quite well with their first album two years ago, but it’s everything that they’ve brought to the table for their second album, “Forever Spoken”, that one cannot help but see the overwhelming and satisfying evolution of Witchpit’s sound clear as day and bow before such might. A pummeling deluge of riffs intertwined with overwhelming intensity that knows precisely how to come at you such that the very whole of Witchpit’s repertoire is magnificent to behold and unyielding even in its smallest moments, “Forever Spoken” is intoxicating to gaze upon and embodies what it means to deliver calculated sludge that is immensely adept at tapping into the more raw aspects of the sound without wholly surrendering itself to unintelligible mess. Rather, Witchpit plays its hand with masterful intent at every turn while always ensuring to keep their display of power massive, undeniable, and simply intense from beginning to end. Where many have tried to do the same treatment for sludge metal, Witchpit achieves greatness virtually without breaking a sweat.

It’s always an immense pleasure to watch any band rise out of essentially nothingness to really grab the scene by the throat and show us what they’re made of with the hype rightfully following such a bold display of titanic presence, and Witchpit is most definitely such an act. For all that sludge metal has been capable of, Witchpit is an act that embodies some of the very best that the style has to offer when it’s given the proper time and attention to detail to make “Forever Spoken” a beacon of magnificence that demands to be paid attention to. Sludge has always been something to behold with bands like Witchpit the pillars of the sound that are perpetuating that excellence.
