There are incredibly few things out there that can ever truly compare to a real slab of unrelenting, carnivorous darkness. That’s something that we’ve seen done to tremendous effect in the more extreme reaches of metal, but it’s even there that exceptional examples can feel few and far between as bands that are able to deliver on such a high level don’t come around terribly often with newer bands feeling even less likely to tap into that madness. However, there are always a few that manage to crawl from their individual tombs to show us what can be conjured still. Slowly building their reputation, Nekus is quickly becoming a real force of that intensity that simply cannot be denied.

While death-doom is one of those styles that has so many different avenues any band could take as they find their way through the sound, few things can compare when a band comes around that takes the most intense path and knows precisely how to navigate its corners, traps, and bouts of madness to make for an immense experience that is simply excellent at carving the soul and flesh. To put it mildly, Nekus is a prime showcasing of that scenario with everything that they’ve wrought within “Death Apophenia” not just a continuation of all that they’ve accomplished before, but a demonstration of what it means to bring froth unyielding death-doom that craves the cold darkness of the crypt from which it crawled. Monolithic in its heaviness and simply overwhelming even in the moments where everything comes to a screeching halt, the brand of madness-induced darkness that Nekus deals in here is simply exquisite. More than capable of vast extremity and more than adept at varying speeds that range from blistering pulverizing evisceration to slow, methodical surgery via blunt force trauma, “Death Apophenia” is anything but a one-dimensional creation of death-doom that seeks to tap into some mild form of darkness. Rather, Nekus blots out the very sun with this record and knows precisely how to capitalize on that excellence in every given moment.

A powerful experience into the underworld that only death-doom of this caliber is able to deliver, the raw menace of Nekus is something to behold as it holds nothing back in any regard nor does it miss an opportunity to assert its titanic dominance. We’ve seen plenty try to do it, yet it’s with a real knack for a particularly intense brand of darkness that few can ever truly tap into, “Death Apophenia” stands as one of the last great stops in 2024 for any and all who want their death-doom as extreme as it gets.
