Svartalfar – Carinthia Obscura – Die Lieder der brennenden Nacht

Black metal really is a fascinating subject. For all that can be done within its confines, there are still throngs of passionate fans that still cling to the olden ways, not easily convinced to allow the march of new sounds and innovative ideas to ruin their fun where the original cold flame of the sound burned hot and viciously bright. Many times over in just the span of a month do we see bands come around trying to offer glory to the sound with few able to do such while still creating a dynamic experience that really keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. Even with having been a name to keep an eye on in the darkness of the underground, it’s with their latest creation that Svartalfar embodies that concept to the highest degree.

Normally, when we think of black metal, a specific sound will come to mind depending on the person, and it’s not often enough that we envision bands that are able to take their sound and much multi-dimensional on a supreme level the likes of which leaves one wanting more. Svartalfar has long been one of those gems of the underground that deserved respect, yet it’s with their latest album, “Carinthia Obscura – Die Lieder den brennenden Nacht”, that Svartalfar has tapped into something that’s on another level altogether. A creation that spans much of the vast realm of black metal from the incorporation of folk elements to undeniable melody to a scathing approach, what we have here is something that many have considered one of the prime examples of underground black metal that the year has given to us, and I’m inclined to agree with that opinion. Exceedingly diverse and masterful in every single aspect of all that it brings to the table, the majestic tapestry that Svartalfar weaves here is of the sort that can only be crafted by real masters of the sound. Taking a lot of cues from old school black metal while never once afraid to add their own touches to the mix to really make “Carinthia Obscura” a creation that is certifiably their own, Svartalfar wields real old world magic in every second put forth here. What’s presented here can only be considered one thing: black metal unfettered by stylistic boundaries and fueled only by real, fiery passion of those who have been immersed in the genre for decades.

Despite returning from a lengthy hiatus just four years ago, Svartalfar has been anything but still in that time with their craft only being further honed as time goes on with this almost sure to go down as one of their most exquisite and fascinating creations to date. Black metal that is simply allowed to be and seamlessly combines so many different stylistic cues to make for a fascinating swirling cauldron of dark excellence the likes of which we’re always lucky to bear witness to, “Carinthia Obscura” is nothing if not impressive in its scathing approach and masterful execution.
