Hierarchies – s/t

Insanity comes in many forms. Death metal is no stranger to such a concept with there always being throngs of bands out there always willing to give it a shot, attempting to bring forth insanity to whatever degree they’re capable of. Technical death metal, in particular, dares this frontier more than others with bands oftentimes looking towards Lovecraftian sources to deliver such flavors of intensity. When they don’t, though, that’s when things really get out of hands even for this most proficient of acts. With their self-titled debut, Hierarches dares to achieve such depravity with surprising results.

It is one thing to put on a performance that does justice to the world of technical death metal. By all accounts, that’s a true feast for the sense that very few other sounds in all of metal are able to come even close to, yet there are always those who try to tap into another level of what the sound can be. Rather than being a flashy display of musicianship and intensity that is certainly impressive and a damn good show many times over, bands dare to peel apart the fabric of reality are few and far between with acts like Hierarchies even rarer. An utterly blistering display of intensity and craziness the likes of which are downright schizophrenic in nature and outright murderous intent, this is what it means to bring true insanity to an aural form the likes of which can really be brought to the table in such a form that feels compelling, interesting, and simply captivating in nature. While there is a devastating understanding of chaos all throughout this eponymous work, Hierarchies knows precisely how to coordinate it all in such a way that things never get out of hand without a firm grip upon the reigns that jerk wildly back and forth as the album writhes and contorts through winding halls that loop on themselves for a maddening maze that never unveils its secret so long as its mastermind has anything to say about it.

A maddening display of prowess, Hierarchies does anything but perform the mundane within these eight tracks. Peak evisceration and more than enough confusion to boot as the album progressively breaks down the mental state of the listener, this is what it means to embody insanity. Hierarchies may have only just now gotten a start on their campaign to rend reality itself, yet it’s one hell of a start that few can boast.
