Truly, there is no school like the old school. While there is always a time and a place for the march of progress and to witness innovation for all that it can bring to the table, there is just nothing that can compare to when a tried and true approach is done real justice. It’s a very basic concept that can be immensely difficult to bring to the table if you don’t approach it right, but that hasn’t stopped legions of death metal acts from doing just that to add reverence to the sound that they clearly worship. After a very busy year, it’s with their latest creation that False Mutation adds to the cacophony with an offering that’s as true to the old school as it is an imposing body of work from top to bottom.
A straightforward attack that’s be done endlessly, almost to the point of immediate exhaustion, can still be done with real finesse and quality the likes of which none can deny once they come face-to-face with an entity that knows precisely what it’s doing right from the beginning. There are many out there out in the underground that are able to deliver intensity that can offer what the old school can, but only the most persistent and stalwart purveyors of the craft and really do it justice like what False Mutation has brought to the table with their forthcoming creation, “Unholy Brutality”. That revered slime covered sound that many have tried their hand at it best served with simplicity alongside the code of “less is more”, and that’s evidently what False Mutation did across the entirety of this nine eviscerating tracks. Seething riffs and a nonstop onslaught that offers no reprieve, no mercy, and nothing short of undeath unending as Hell overflows onto Earth, “Unholy Brutality” shows us what it means to be deadly at your craft. Without compromise nor a single shred of light undevoured for the entire course of the record, False Mutation thrives in the darkness that this genre has been carefully crafting for decades now where many find themselves well at home like what’s happened with this obscure German act that refuses to sit still for long before writhing in madness yet again.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel in order to bring excellence to the table, but, much like what I saw with Crypt Crawler the other night, just being solid at what you do is more than enough, and it demands to be made clear that False Mutation is well beyond solid. Devastation at every turn and nothing short of a damn good performance that cloaks this world in undeath and darkness, “Unholy Brutality” more than lives up to its name.
