For all intents and purposes, technical death metal has become an absolute monolith of what modern death metal is capable of with all the meat, flair, and color that one could ask for that would rarely have been associated with death metal decades ago. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the style has exploded in the past ten years with there being legions upon legions of names out there that have come out of the nothingness to show us what they can bring to the table, and the competition has been exceedingly stiff from all angles. That’s still a phenomenon that is happening today to a great degree with there always being a fresh name to one’s eyes given how dense the scene has quickly become. As one, Fleshbore has made quite an impression with its new album that is more than ready to stand up to the said competition.
A display of prowess in your craft can be something that sets apart any band in their particular style, but that tends to be the very base for what can be considered anything interesting in the world of technical death metal where everything is cutthroat to the maximum and there isn’t so much as a shred of room for error lest you quickly find yourself left behind. Given such high stakes, this is a style that oftentimes feels as though it solely deals in names that are able to deliver at a high level that boggles the mind. Fleshbore is absolutely such a qualifying name with the creation of “Painted Paradise” practically a snapshot of what has made this style such a beast to contend with in its current form. A simply eviscerating album that never once takes too long to rest in place no matter what’s to come next, Fleshbore has put forth a creation that is immensely indicative of the experience that the band has accrued for itself over the last seventh years with this as only their second full-length offering showing us precisely what kind of act we’re dealing with here. Never once afraid to dip into the realms of brutal death metal while always making time for the flashy technicality that the style is all but known for, it’s made clear from top to bottom that “Painted Paradise” is a love letter to the style at large with Fleshbore a brilliant vessel to show us what else this sound is able to bring forward while leaving more than enough room for Fleshbore to improve, hone, and sharpen their sound such that they stand out even more so in the future. While still having a long way to go in their own journey throughout the style, one cannot deny the potentiality for greatness that’s seen throughout “Painted Paradise”.
The sheer density of what technical death metal has become speaks volumes towards the high level of grandeur that the sound is constantly dealing in with somewhat fresher names like Fleshbore only adding to its magnificence and further defining what it means to become masters in this craft. From top to bottom, “Painted Paradise” is a snapshot of what this sound is able to do in the right hands with the future incredibly bright for any band that can be likened to Fleshbore.
