It’s important to remember where you came from, but it’s more often than not that bands seek to stake their own claim in territories of their own as they continue to grow and evolve their sound as time goes on. For some, such changes come sooner with some making wild shifts yet others make small changes here and there as their personalities make for the differences when all is said and done. When Heavy Trip came around with its first piece three years ago, it was anybody’s guess which direction the instrumental act would take their sound. Now, however, it’s with the arrival of their second album that we see Heavy Trip going for the former route while never once forgetting to look back and remember where they came from.
If there was but one word that we could ever hope to boil this four-track creation down to, “ripping” would certainly be a solid chance, in my opinion. While there are many different avenues that one could choose from considering the sheer breath the heavy psych has garnered for itself over the years, it’s not terribly commonplace to see a band come around that doesn’t just seek to take that heavy part quite seriously but use the opportunity to really flex their capacity for flashiness. Still more than capable of pulling back and show us what they can do in broader strokes, it’s throughout the entirety of “Liquid Planet” that Heavy Trip rarely sits still for so long with the concept of shredding solos seeming to be a real favorite concept during the writing process of the album. As such, it quickly enables this performance to take on different flavors than much of the competition. A speedy performance that is constantly shifting while the clearly sci-fi backdrop to the album is always swirling and thrusting the listener into an alien world where the very rules of reality don’t seem to apply, it becomes clear from anyone familiar with Heavy Trip that the band has already come an immensely long way in a relatively short amount of time. Across the all of the four tracks that adorn “Liquid Planet”, it’s made clear time and again that this is not a name that we should underestimate.
For all that can be done in the realm of heavy psychedelia, the instrumental sprawl that we bear witness to here feels exceedingly fresh and unashamed in all that it can be. Electrifying from top to bottom and never once missing out on that crispy psychedelia as the heaviness takes the forefront, “Liquid Planet” is a swirling cauldron of color and splendor that demands to be taken one drop at a time to truly savor all that goes on within.
