For all that doom metal has become known for in recent times, it’s intensity is certainly something that many can focus in on pretty easily. Whether it’s in the more sludge-oriented reaches of the sound, the riff-heavy acts that many of us gravitate towards, or a raw dirge of bile and blasphemy that comes about when doom is mixed with other territories of extreme metal, doom has much to offer for those willing to dig for what they want. Those who enjoy funeral doom, however, can oftentimes find themselves waiting quite some time before coming upon a new, worthy, and fresh effort of the niche sound that actually manages to deliver. I never know when I will find such a piece in the depths of the underground, and I certainly wasn’t expecting to find it today when I stumbled upon Eurynome, yet here I am before such a massive piece of what funeral doom can be in capable hands.
Slow and steady can oftentimes be the name of the game in a genre like doom where patience can well and truly be a virtue in more ways than one with legions upon legions of acts bringing glory to such a concept over the decades, and that continues to be the case so long as the band in question can bring forth something interesting to add to such an atmosphere whether it be an evocative edge or something that’s purely found within the production itself. For Eurynome, it’s both. Already having a firm grip on the imagery and emotional edge that funeral doom has become all but known for, it’s throughout the whole of “Miserere” that we see the band approach with distorted bass tuned to 436 Hz which was commonplace in instruments played during the 19th century, and every inch of this record reflects such invocation! A dreary, dense, and meaty creation that has so much going on in the background while Eurynome is naught but a lumbering beast upon the shores of a dilapidated tomb that time is slowly washing away, “Miserere” is funeral doom done right with all the right boxes being checked along the way. Already knowing their strengths and putting forth a performance that’s as layered as it is oppressive in nature, Eurynome encapsulates the sound in stupendous fashion while somehow leaving more than enough room for personal nuance to shine and take center stage.
Funeral doom metal is one of those sounds that while likely never catch on as some hot sound that will see a proper explosion of new talent upon its shores, yet that ultimately adds to the charm that the creation has as a sound truly of the underground and nothing else with bands like Eurynome always finding prowess and splendor somehow within such obscurity. “Miserere” has so much flavor and intricacies within to be uncovered. You must simply allow the sound of waves lapping upon the shore to lure you in as Eurynome weaves is dark but beautiful spell.
