It’s always fascinating to witness the arrival of a new name in the vast underground, but with such an event always comes a good deal of uncertainty. Anything is possible with a new group with failure absolutely amongst the options, yet that hasn’t stopped legions from continuously combing through the darkness for decades and decades to find new talent that’s able to deliver and scratch an itch that cannot be done anywhere else. Coming upon a fresh name that delivers feels like coming upon treasure sometimes. Having Necronos brought before me tonight, I feel that very way as I type these words.

A blank slate can be the thing that many musicians need to find themselves crafting material that feels exceedingly fresh and new to their senses with anything possible before they throw down that first note. In their first venture as a single unit and with more than enough experience in the bag, it’s with everything that Necronos brings to the table in their sci-fi debut, “Charred Tongue”, that we get nothing short of a thrilling experience that has all the nuance and power that one could ask for out of death metal of this breed. Offering little reprieve to those who come before this expansive tale of interstellar revenge from the shadows, it’s damn near every given element of “Charred Tongue” that we see a solid breadth of what Necronos is already capable of with the combined experience of these musicians speaking volumes over and over to make for a listen that really grabs you by the gnads and never once relinquishes its grip. Constantly tapping into much of what has always made sci-fi death metal nothing to underestimate yet never once showing us the entire arsenal to leave more than enough room for surprise in later efforts which is a simply invigorating concept given how well everything has come together for this bombastic debut.

Where the endlessness of the cosmos comes crashing together with the raw justified fury of vengeance, Necronos rises with an effort that is simply delectable and unrelenting from top to bottom. Compelling in its narrative and its voracious songwriting, “Charred Tongue” is the start of a cosmic crusade the likes of which the world of death metal is always in short supply of.
